Strategic axis 3

The Planet

Environment, circularity and energy

Managing the environmental impact of our activity is crucial for us. The actions and objectives integrated in this axis are aimed at calculating, mitigating and compensating this impact, reducing resource consumption and waste generation and implementing the circular economy as a management model.

We are a carbon neutral company

A company is carbon neutral when it manages to neutralize all the greenhouse gases (GHG) that its activity emits, through the calculation, reduction and compensation of its emissions.

In 2015 we began calculating the Organization's Carbon Footprint* and since 2019 we have calculated and offset our scope 1 and 2 emissions annually.

Our work has validated our achievement of the Calculate-Reduce-Compensate seal, a recognition granted by the National Carbon Footprint Registry and the calculated and compensated CO₂ certifications from AENOR.

In 2024 we have again offset 100% of scope 1 and 2 emissions.

How does Grupo Jorge become Carbon Neutral?

We conduct an emissions inventory and calculate our carbon footprint.

This is the first step to understanding our impact, identifying the main sources of emissions, setting annual reduction targets, and designing specific strategies to achieve them.

114,306 t CO₂ in Scope 1 and 2 in 2024

561,076 t CO₂ in Scope 3 in 2024

We develop an emissions reduction plan (within our value chain) with medium and long-term objectives.

We have developed a medium-term decarbonization plan with ambitious emissions reduction targets up to 2030. Furthermore, this decarbonization plan was validated during 2025 by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI), which sets "science-based" reduction targets to meet the goal of the Paris Agreement: limiting global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Among the measures implemented to achieve this reduction in emissions, we have self-consumption photovoltaic parks for the generation of renewable energy that allow us to reduce our consumption of grid energy; also with residual thermal energy recovery systems that help us to achieve greater energy efficiency.

  • 20.57 GWh generated in 2024 (self-consumption PV)
  • 15.6 GWh of thermal energy recovered in 2024

In addition to self-consumption parks, we have wind and photovoltaic generation parks in different parts of Spain:

  • 492.9 GWh generated in 2024 (renewable energy: wind and photovoltaic)
  • 130,874 t CO₂ avoided + absorbed

We invest in carbon offsetting projects (outside the value chain) through the voluntary carbon market in different parts of the world.

That is to say - when we cannot reduce our emissions further, we compensate for those that we cannot eliminate by investing in reduction projects in countries in which we operate.

Get know them

We implement a culture of sustainability at all levels of the company and when engaging with our stakeholders.

We evaluate our suppliers in terms of sustainability in order to control and optimize our processes.

WE CALCULATE OUR SCOPE 3 EMISSIONS

In 2022 we took a key step towards decarbonization by calculating Scope 3 emissions. These are those associated with our product's value chain but over which our organization has no direct control, therefore, they are more difficult to measure and reduce.

This calculation allows us to identify new opportunities to further reduce our impact. We evaluate our suppliers tomeasure their alignment with our decarbonization goals.

The result in 2024 of these emissions associated with the value chain was 561,076 tCO₂e.

Our purpose is to continue reducing our impact

Our sustainability strategy is aligned with the United Nations “Net-Zero” goal for 2050. Our purpose is to continue reducing our GHG emissions until they are as close to zero as possible and neutralize residual emissions.

Climate commitments and certifications

At Grupo Jorge, we work to ensure that our commitment to sustainability is supported by international assessment and verification frameworks.

CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) Questionnaire

In September 2024, we completed the CDP questionnaire, one of the most recognized global tools for measuring companies' performance on climate change. Through this voluntary report, we shared detailed data on our emissions, associated risks, and mitigation strategies.

SBTi (Science Based Targets Initiative)

SBTi is an international initiative that helps companies set science-based emissions reduction targets; that is, targets aligned with the goal of keeping global warming below 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, the threshold that science considers safe to avoid serious climate impacts.

Our decarbonization plan has been validated by SBTi, which ensures that our 2030 targets are achievable and consistent with these objectives.

DAP Environmental Product Declaration

We have obtained this certification that measures the environmental impact derived from a product and its life cycle: from the manufacture of the feed, breeding and slaughter, to the butchering and its marketing.

This tool allows us to offer transparent and verifiable information about the environmental profile of our products.

Strategic objectives of this axis and alignment with the SDGs

Some specific actions that we carry out under the label of Feeding the Future

We calculated and verified our water footprint through AENOR with the aim of reducing it.

We recover more than 90% of the waste generated by our activity.

We continue to develop our renewable energy parks and are committed to self-consumption.

We monitor the evolution of our forest plantations (our own CO2e sinks).

We recover and store thermal energy to use it within the production process (significantly reducing our consumption, especially of natural gas).

We use intermodal transport and have a presence in logistics centers for a more efficient transfer of raw materials and finished product.

We carry out efficient slurry management, optimizing the routes for its application as fertilizers.

We promote zero waste, adding value to by-products for the production of PET-FOOD, fertilizers and biofuels.

We undergo regular audits that help us measure and reduce the environmental impact of our activity.

Grupo Jorge is a member of the SBTi initiative, certifying its commitment to decarbonization.

We have our own crops that serve as a means of absorbing GHGs

We have more than 170 hectares given over to forest plantations of fine woods (walnut and cherry trees) that function as natural sinks, absorbing part of the CO₂ that is emitted into the atmosphere.

We carry out responsible management of our resources and waste

We transform our business by implementing circular economy in all our production phases: optimizing the management of water resources and waste.

We have obtained the “Aragón Circular” seal (2022), which verifies our commitment to this management model. We have also received the “Zero Waste” certification awarded by AENOR for our meat processing plants in Zuera, Santa Eugenia de Berga (Vic), and Mollerusa.

We have also obtained the Sustainable Fleet Certificate for promoting actions to optimize fleet efficiency, ISO 14001 and the FSC and PEFC seals, which promote sustainable forest management.
