The role of pork in adolescent nutrition
Based on the study by Dr. Luis Moreno Aznar – Professor of Public Health, University of Zaragoza.
At the Grupo Jorge Foundation, in collaboration with the Chair agreement with UNIZAR, we share this valuable scientific study prepared by Dr. Luis Moreno Aznar, a leading figure in the field of public health, nutrition, and growth during adolescence.
Dr. Moreno holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Zaragoza and a diploma in Human Nutrition, Dietetics and Therapeutic Dietetics, as well as in Public Health and Community Health from the University of Nancy (France). He currently serves as Professor of Public Health at the University of Zaragoza and has an extensive research career, backed by numerous prestigious publications at the national and international level.
His study focuses on adolescence as a key stage of human development, during which accelerated physical growth, hormonal maturation, and physiological changes significantly increase nutritional needs.
During this stage, the body needs:
- More energy and quality proteins
- B vitamins (such as B12, B6, thiamine, and niacin)
- Antioxidant vitamins (C, A, and E)
- Calcium, iron, zinc, and vitamin D
And what role does pork play in this context?
Dr. Moreno highlights that, as part of a balanced diet, pork is a very valuable nutritional source for adolescents, as it provides:
- Vitamins B1, B6, B12, niacin, and folic acid
- Minerals such as iron, zinc, and phosphorus
- High biological value proteins
- Low sodium content and the option to choose lean cuts
In addition, as part of the HELENA project (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence), funded by the European Commission, the need to improve eating habits among the adolescent population was highlighted. The responsible inclusion of foods such as pork can help address many of the common shortfalls during this stage.
Reinforcing our messages with scientific evidence and giving visibility to studies by prestigious experts, such as Dr. Moreno, is a priority for the sector. Proper nutrition today is the foundation of solid health tomorrow.
